SK has by far the nicest beach/sand. Sanibel has the better shelling. They both have some good casual restaurants. Sanibel has more green space, most of it wild.
If you want a more upscale area, an even better beach (but clearwater’s is great) then Siesta key is better. And a bit more quiet (if you arent in the Village area and most arent. Clearwaer is better if you want to walk out for dinner, bars etc.
Siesta Key is one of the cheaper destinations in Florida, but it can still get pretty pricey during peak season. Sarasota offers more budget-friendly vacation rentals, it also has a livelier Downtown area with an endless assortment of bars, boutiques and restaurants to choose from.
In the two years/trips we have made, my experiences at Siesta Key were that it’s water was very calm, with slight waves but nothing capable of boogie boarding with. Our children’s favorite beach is Panama City Beach, which has lots of families with kids that play together, and the waves are great!

They are both very nice! Siesta Key has more of the village feel and is more walkable, but Marco Island is more upscale and closer to the Everglades, for exploring. In my opinion, you really can’t go wrong with either!
