If you want to enable this dark mode for all future navigations in Google Maps, open up the app and go to Settings > Navigation settings > Map display. Click on the option labeled Tools and then click on Change map. Once there, click on the button labeled Change feature styles. There are plenty of options for changing the different styles of your markers, which includes changing their color.
It works for both traditional Google Maps at maps.google.com and the new one at www.google.com/maps. Toggling to Earth/Satellite mode turns off the extra contrast. By right clicking the Earth/Satellite button you can toggle the extra contrast independently.
Google Maps will highlight the quickest route for you in blue, but you can always change your route by selecting one of the grey alternative routes, or clicking and dragging the route to customize it. You can change your route on Google Maps on the desktop version or the mobile app.

In general the direction seems to be to make Google Map just a ‘basemap’ for displaying other data, rather than a useful map in and of itself. Ie its deliberately low contrast, so that can ‘see’ the data overlaid over the top. Such as search results, and ads ;p.

To start drawing your route simply doubleclick on the map to set the starting pinpoint, then continue to click each of the points along the route you wish to follow. You can change the map view to satellite, hybrid or terrain using the selector on the top left corner of the route map.

The best alternative is Google Earth. It’s not free, so if you’re looking for a free alternative, you could try Mapillary or HERE WeGo. Other great apps like Google Street View are Kartaview (Free, Open Source), Apple Maps (Free), Yandex. Maps (Free) and Bing Maps (Free).
Calibrate the Compass
And for that, you can manually calibrate the compass in the Google Maps app. Here’s how. Step 1: Open the Google Maps app on your phone and tap on the blue dot in the center showing your current location. Now tap on the ‘Calibrate compass’ option at the bottom left.
