If you want to enable this dark mode for all future navigations in Google Maps, open up the app and go to Settings > Navigation settings > Map display. Click on the option labeled Tools and then click on Change map. Once there, click on the button labeled Change feature styles. There are plenty of options for changing the different styles of your markers, which includes changing their color.
It works for both traditional Google Maps at maps.google.com and the new one at www.google.com/maps. Toggling to Earth/Satellite mode turns off the extra contrast. By right clicking the Earth/Satellite button you can toggle the extra contrast independently.

Calibrate the Compass
