Real rubies glow with a deep, vivid, almost “stoplight” red. Fake gems are often dull: they are “light, but not bright.” If the gem is more of a dark red, then it may be garnet instead of a ruby. If it is a real ruby, however, know that darker stones are usually worth more than lighter stones.
Use the ruby to scratch a hard and yet smooth surface, such as a piece of glass. If there is a streak of red color left behind on the surface, then it is clear that your stone is a fake. A real ruby will never leave color in that way.
Artificial rubies are made of glass. Therefore, the simplest way to know if the ruby is fake or not is to compare it with a glass of similar tinge. Take a piece of red glass and compare it with the fake one. If the two matches, then the stone is a fake one.
Rubies can cost anywhere between $100 up to as much as $15,000/carat, depending on the color, clarity, origin and size.
The method I used to determine the value is by first categorizing the stone based on the 4Cs + OT method.
Ruby prices begin from as low as ₹ 450 and trend up to ₹ 2 Lakh per carat ($12 to $1,600). An Old Burmese ruby weighing between ½ and 1 carat with dark red or deep pink color and minimal inclusions can price anywhere between ₹ 70,000 to 1,15,000 per carat ($1,300 to $1,600).
Grind a coin or fingernail into your ruby’s surface and see if it is getting scratches. If your stone is showing a scratch, then it is not a real ruby. Scratch the ruby against a hard surface such as a piece of clear glass or a porcelain tile. Keep in mind to check if the ruby stone leaves a red mark on the surface.
Rubies are extremely hard and rank almost at the top of the toughness scale. They’re intensely resistant to scratches and cleavage and are near-impossible to break. Even if the ruby is cracked, it can still withstand further damage. Although, a bad enough crack can eventually break the stone.

The reason rubies exhibit the red color in the first place is that they contain levels of chromium. The more chromium a ruby has, the stronger and more intense its red hue. Genuine Burma rubies contain a red color called pigeon blood, which can be described as purple-red or dark pink-red.
Ovals are the most popular with cutters. This is because an oval cut reduces waste and often is better to draw out the deep red color of the stone. Next in popularity are the octagon or emerald shape and the heart shape.
Burmese Ruby Prices
Burma ruby prices fluctuate steeply even in the same carat weight range because of color and clarity of the gemstone. A Burmese ruby with minimal inclusions and deep red color can easily draw between ₹ 1,00,000 to ₹ 1,20,000 per carat ($1,400 to $1,600 ) in the market, even more.
The source of the world’s finest rubies is Burma, or present-day Myanmar, and for more than 800 years the Mogok Stone Tract mine has produced the most beautiful examples, thanks to the unique geological conditions.Aug 21, 2020
Rubies are found in shades of red, from rich darkish red to pigeon blood red and pinkish red. The Burmese coined the term “Pigeon’s blood” for rubies that exhibit a rich red with a purple secondary hue. Rubies are in the same gem family as sapphires. And a ruby that is very pink is actually a pink sapphire.
As we mentioned earlier, Ruby is one of the hardest gemstones, therefore it should not be easily scratched: With a damp of cloth or a toothbrush clean the ruby, in order to remove any debris or marks. Then dig your fingernail into the gemstone to see if you can leave a scratch. If you can, it’s not a real ruby.
A high-pressure stream of water washes the gravel away from the stream deposits. As the rocks containing the rubies are dense therefore they remain in place while the smaller deposits wash away. The gemstone is extracted by hand from these deposits as they are small and irregularly shaped.
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius, Libra, Capricorn, and Pisces ascendants should never wear rubies. This is because of the Sun’s position and its enmity with these planetary positions.
Check your jewelry often to make sure the stones are not loose and the mountings look secure. Avoid wearing jewelry when you are doing housework, gardening, playing sports, or around drains like when showering, doing dishes, or washing hands.
With ruby being a tough gemstone, there is a minimal chance that it chips. However, it could have various types of inclusions, each with a different structure and appearance. These inherent flaws can affect the gem’s overall durability, and also bring down its value if they’re visible to the naked eye.
