The South Rim is at a lower elevation which allows you to get a better view of the walls of the opposite rim. The sheer magnitude of the Grand Canyon is much more visible from the South Rim. Both are great but very different, but as RedRox has mentioned, Sedona is closer to Grand Canyon (Painted Desert is all over east of GC) and location of Sedona is superb. Nightlife is better in Scottsdale though.
