Magikarp (and some others?) require at least 400 candies to evolve. The obvious way to evolve a Magikarp is to catch 101 wild Magikarp (which would take me about 0.5 years). Thus far, I’ve caught 1 (maybe 2) Magikarp and hatched 1.
MAGIKARP is virtually useless in battle as it can only splash around. As a result, it is considered to be weak. However, it is actually a very hardy POKéMON that can survive in any body of water no matter how polluted it is. It is virtually worthless in terms of both power and speed.
Magikarp (Japanese: コイキング Koiking) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It evolves into Gyarados starting at level 20.
It’s still hotly debated why Gyarados is a Flying-type Pokémon when it would arguably be better suited as a Dragon- or Dark-type, but either way, it can still learn Flying-type moves like Hurricane and Bounce. This is why trainers may be surprised to realize it’s unable to learn the move Fly.
The 400s – Four Pokémon families actually require 400 candies to evolve. They are Magikarp, Swablu, Wailmer and Meltan. For the first two, the reason for this is probably just because their evolved forms, Gyarados and Alteria, are quite sought after Pokémon.
The final tip we have for collecting 400 Magikarp candy as fast as possible is by farming the Field Research quest to Catch X Number of Pokemon. If players find a PokeStop that is giving out this quest, they can spin it once a day for repeated opportunities to catch Magikarp.

I’m super hesitant on evolving my Magikarp since I finally got 400 candies, and I’ve looked through many posts about powering up before/after evolution, and that everyone seems to agree that it doesn’t matter too much, but you should evolve early for the moveset you want so you’re not wasting stardust.
Gyarados/Weakness
Gyarados is a Water & Flying-type Pokemon and it evolves from a small fish Pokemon known as Magikarp. It is weak against Electric and Rock-type moves.Feb 10, 2021
With the exception of Speed all of Magikarp’s stats are low, it can’t learn ANY moves from TMs/HMs — and it doesn’t learn any useful attacks on its own, either.
Magikarp can actually learn Bounce and Hydro Pump in Generation VIII. Prior to that, however, Magikarp was one of many Pokemon that could not learn a move via TM or HM. Everyone knows that Magikarp evolves into the incredibly powerful Gyarados.

But the odds of encountering a Shiny version of Gyarados in the wild of most games happens in one out of every 8,192 Gyarados encounters … which are exceedingly rare to begin with.
The observed shiny rate, from The Silph Road is 1 in 450 for random wild encounters. With that data, the observed Magikarp shiny rate was 1 in 360 (95% CI 310 – 440), but testing if there was a difference in rate between all the shiny species collectively was not statistically significant.
You can do this through combat or by using a Rare Candy. If Golbat has 220+ Friendship, it will evolve to Crobat.
