Settled in 1812, the city is situated on a gentle horseshoe bend on the Ohio River and often referred to as “River City.” One of the most popular attractions in the region is Casino Aztar, the first riverboat casino in the state of Indiana.
1. Evansville Was Originally Called McGary’s Landing. Hugh McGary began a town on the Ohio River and called it McGary’s Landing in 1812. McGary’s Landing was renamed Evansville in 1814 to sound more attractive to potential land buyers.

Abner Luce founded Newburgh almost directly to the east of Sprinklesburgh in 1829.
In 1814, to attract more people, McGary renamed his village “Evansville” in honor of Colonel Robert Morgan Evans. Evansville incorporated in 1817 and was designated as the county seat on January 7, 1818. The county was named for Henry Vanderburgh, a deceased chief judge of the Indiana Territorial Supreme Court.
With a crime rate of 46 per one thousand residents, Evansville has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes – from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One’s chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 22.
Evansville is in part a decent city, but it has high crime areas and poor driving conditions. Generally if you like to live in a decent neighborhood you’ll need to choose the far west side, the Far East side, or the north side. Evansville is a good city in many regards.
Evansville is 75.3% white, 13.6% Black, 1.2% Asian and 7% multiracial with other racial groups comprising the rest. 4.3% in the city report they are Hispanic or Latino.
The Hoosier State
They were called “Hoosier’s men” and eventually all Indianans were called Hoosiers. A theory attributed to Gov. Joseph Wright derived Hoosier from an Indian word for corn, “hoosa.” Indiana flatboatmen taking corn or maize to New Orleans came to be known as “hoosa men” or Hoosiers.
Another possible point of discussion would be why Indiana has only produced one president, Benjamin Harrison, but six vice presidents.
Altogether there are SEVEN Evansville’s in the United States that are actually considered towns or villages with steady populations.
The Evansville/Vanderburgh County area is a thriving community that serves as the commercial, medical, educational and cultural hub for the Indiana/Kentucky/Illinois tristate region.

In 1743, a ferry at the foot of First Street had been established between Newburgh and Fishkill Landing (now Beacon, New York). In 1752, the land had been surveyed by Cadwallader Colden and named “Newburgh” after Newburgh in his native Scotland. Shipyards were established and docks and warehouses lined the waterfront.
